On Tuesday, April 23rd, I had the opportunity to perform my final MM Conducting recital with the talented musicians of the WVU Wind Symphony. Below are three of the pieces from that evening: Chorale and Alleluia, The Captain General, and Kaddish.

Chorale and Alleluia
Composed in 1954, Chorale and Alleluia was Howard Hanson's first composition for symphonic band and has since become a staple piece of the wind band repertoire.

The Captain General
Originally written for orchestra and adapted for band by the composer himself, this piece was composed to commemorate a visit by King George VI, at the time serving as Captain General of the Royal Marines, to the Savoy in London in December of 1949.

Kaddish
This powerful piece, composed by W. Francis McBeth, was written in memory of his teacher, Clifton Williams. The piece takes its title from the Jewish prayer for the dead. The listener can hear direct and referential quotes of Williams' work throughout, particularly in direct quotes of his Caccia and Chorale.
